Vienna - PORR has achieved a top rating in the internationally renowned environmental rating of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

The Group was able to convince with its strategy for reducing emissions and energy efficiency. In the area of climate change, the CDP awarded it the excellent grade 'A-' and a rise to the 'Leadership' segment.

More than 13,000 companies worldwide took part in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) rating this year. In this challenging environment, PORR AG has achieved the top grade A- in the field of climate change for the first time and thus established itself in the 'Leadership' segment. This makes PORR one of those best practice companies that play a pioneering role in terms of sustainability.

'We are pleased that we have achieved above-average values not only in comparison with international participants from the construction industry, but also in comparison with all participating companies in Europe and worldwide,' says PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss. PORR also took part in the water sector - for the first time this year - and immediately received a grade of B.

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is a non-profit organization that provides a global reporting system for investors, companies, cities, states, and regions to assess their environmental impacts. This provides a basis for a climate-safe, deforestation-free and water-safe future. The CDP now manages the world's largest database in this area.

Climate protection strategically anchored

'This rating result confirms that we are on the right track with our climate strategy,' says Strauss. 'Our focus is on energy and resource efficiency as well as emission reduction. We rely on closed resource cycles, the use of renewable energies and digital building models.' For example, PORR 2020 was able to increase the volume of self-generated energy by 114 percent to 337 MWh within one year. There was also a significant increase of 7,586 t in the recycled material used. Overall, the target of reducing emissions by 7.5 percent from 2015 to 2020 was even exceeded.

When purchasing construction machinery, the PORR Group pays attention to the latest generation of equipment, with the focus on alternative drives and energies. Equipment and fleet management is centrally controlled. Old production facilities are continuously being renewed and construction site logistics are being optimized in order to increase energy efficiency and at the same time reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

For the buildings it erects, PORR pays attention to the lowest possible CO not only in the construction method itself but also throughout the entire life cycle of the building.2footprint. The company is constructing a particularly sustainable building in Dusseldorf's Medienhafen, for example. The Cradle is a recyclable wood hybrid house. The building is a wood-concrete construction with a facade made of wood and glass and a staircase core made of recycled concrete. Almost all materials can be recycled after use.

With the certification of all sites throughout the Group according to the ISO 14001 management system and throughout Austria additionally according to ISO 50001, PORR also meets high standards in terms of environmental and climate protection. Water-saving construction techniques and increasing water efficiency in the construction phase are also on the Group's agenda. The progress of the climate strategy is regularly reviewed and, if necessary, further developed.

Incentive for further measures

Strauss sees this year's CDP rating as an incentive for further adjustments to the environmental and climate protection strategy. 'In 2022, we are planning further sustainable and promising construction projects with which we want to set new standards,' says Strauss. 'We see this as an important task. The construction and real estate industry has a central responsibility for environmental protection due to the heavy consumption of resources.'
