N. Korea fires ballistic missile, lands outside Japan's EEZ

TOKYO - North Korea launched a ballistic missile Tuesday, with the projectile likely to have fallen into waters outside Japan's exclusive economic zone, the Japanese Defense Ministry said.

There are no reports of damage to aircraft or vessels, a Japanese government source said.

M6.0 quake jolts northeastern Japan, no tsunami warning issued

TOKYO - An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 jolted a wide area in northeastern Japan early Tuesday, the weather agency said. No tsunami warning was issued.

The 4:24 a.m. quake registered lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in areas including Hachinohe and Misawa in Aomori Prefecture, and Miyako and Kuji in Iwate Prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Rakuten to reorganize financial units amid mounting mobile losses

TOKYO - Rakuten Group Inc. said Monday it plans to reorganize its financial units by consolidating its banking, brokerage, credit card and insurance operations as it grapples with mounting losses in its mobile business.

Under its restructuring plan, Rakuten Bank Ltd., Rakuten Securities Holdings Inc., Rakuten Card Co., and Rakuten Insurance Holdings Co. will be integrated into one group by October, the Japanese online retail giant said in a statement. The bank will play the leading role among the units to be streamlined.

LDP eyes punishing members over scandal, leaves out Kishida

TOKYO - The Liberal Democratic Party said Monday it will pursue punishment for 39 members over a political funds scandal that has rattled the ruling party since late last year, notably excluding Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and party heavyweight Toshihiro Nikai who has decided not to seek reelection as a lawmaker.

The LDP has come under intense scrutiny since some of its factions, including the largest one formerly led by the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, were found to have neglected to report portions of fundraising party revenue for years, with hundreds of millions of yen passed back to members.

Ex-Taiwan leader Ma kicks off China visit, may meet Xi amid tensions

TAIPEI - Former Taiwanese leader Ma Ying-jeou of the opposition Nationalist Party kicked off Monday an 11-day visit to mainland China, where he may meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, amid tensions across the Taiwan Strait.

The trip takes place ahead of the inauguration in May of Taiwanese President-elect Lai Ching-te, who heads the ruling, independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party. Taiwanese media has reported Ma may hold what would be his second talks with Xi in Beijing on April 8.

Xi seeks deeper cooperation with Indonesia in talks with next leader

BEIJING - Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday expressed willingness to deepen "all-around strategic cooperation" with Indonesia as he met with President-elect Prabowo Subianto in Beijing, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

Prabowo, the incumbent Indonesian defense minister, said he is delighted to make China the first country he visits after winning the presidential election in February and said he supports closer ties with Beijing, the ministry added.

Tan Tan, oldest panda in Japan, dies after more than 20-year stay

KOBE - Tan Tan, the oldest giant panda in Japan, has died at age 28 at a Kobe zoo after contributing to friendly ties with China and cheering up locals in the aftermath of a major earthquake that hit western Japan in 1995, the zoo said Monday.

The panda, who was between 80 and 100 years old in human years, came to Oji Zoo from China in 2000 for breeding purposes.

80% of dietary supplement victims saw doctor in Jan. or later: study

TOKYO - Around 80 percent of patients who developed health issues after consuming Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. red yeast rice dietary supplements went to the hospital in January or later, a study by the Japanese Society of Nephrology showed Monday.

The online survey analyzed 47 cases reported by the society's member doctors between Wednesday and Sunday, following recent revelations of five deaths and over 100 hospitalizations among those who consumed the Osaka-based drugmaker's supplements containing "beni-koji" red yeast rice.
