BERLIN/MUKRAN (dpa-AFX) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has failed in the Bundesrat (upper house of the German parliament) with an advance concerning, among other things, the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal planned in Mukran on the island of Rügen. The state's proposal provided, for example, that the approval of the LNG plant could be limited in time, if necessary. In addition, it was to be stipulated that a fixed terminal in Mukran should replace at least one floating terminal as soon as possible in order to be able to switch to hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives as quickly as possible, which is not possible with floating terminals. The motion from MV did not receive a majority.

On Friday, the Bundesrat dealt with an amendment to the LNG Acceleration Act (LNGG) submitted by the German government. This also provides for Mukran to be included as an LNG site. This would enable faster approvals for the project.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) had voiced criticism of the plans at Mukran in the state chamber. The state government would have preferred a plant far out on the Baltic Sea. The Bundestag still has to deal with the LNGG amendment./chh/DP/mis
