Frankfurt Airport in Germany on Friday introduced a facial recognition system that identifies all passengers from check-in to boarding. Until now,this system was reserved for Lufthansa and Star Alliance customers. Soon it will apply to everyone.

To reduce waiting times, Frankfurt airport is the first in Europe to introduce biometric check-in for all travelers. Airport operator Fraport says this method will be accessible to passengers of all airlines, provided they register for it in advance.

In the news. Those who register in advance via the Star Alliance biometric app or directly at the check-in kiosk using their biometric passport will now no longer have to stand in line to have their passport and/or other documents checked. Your face then acts as your boarding pass.

  • The system, which has been tested since 2020 by Star Alliance airlines (Lufthansa, Air Canada, EgyptAir, Brussels Airlines, etc.) and is now open to all other airlines.
  • Frankfurt is the first European airport to fully implement facial recognition, while several other airports are testing the system. The system also works for passengers wearing mouth masks.

Zaventem also has a facial recognition system for biometric passports. This still requires passengers to introduce their passports into the device.
