Inspiring the Future Generation

Posted on 5th July 2017by Styles&Wood

On Tuesday 20 June, Construction students from Salford City College got a 'behind the scenes' tour of a Styles&Wood live site at St Ann's Square in Manchester, where an old office space is being converted into 21 luxury apartments. The tour was arranged, following conversations with Salford City College, to provide practical examples of live projects as well as providing some career advice on different roles and routes into the industry.

After a safety induction and briefing Trainee Project Manager, Luke Burgess, and Senior Project Manager, Andrew Kitchen, led the group of students on a tour giving them an insight into what life on a working site is really like.

Whilst witnessing the progress to date, the students had the chance to experience first-hand the procedures and challenges involved with the day-to-day running of a project, particularly on such a busy and logistical challenging site in the city centre.

The tour was followed by three of our current apprentices and trainees speaking about their own learning experiences and some of their day to day responsibilities. They emphasised the wide range of roles within the industry and how the Styles&Wood Apprenticeship and Graduate Programme had supported them to begin their career.

Karen Morley, HR Director at Styles&Wood, commented:

'Our work at St Ann's Square is a great example of one of the impressive projects we have secured as the Group continues to grow. Our strength lies within our people, whilst this was a great opportunity for the students it was also an opportunity for us to attract and develop the future generation of the industry. We currently have nine apprentices working in multiple disciplines across the business and we're delighted to be offering a further two opportunities as part of this year's intake.'

Angela Daly, Professional Construction Teacher at Salford City College, said:

'A huge thank you to Styles&Wood and everyone involved in making it such a brilliant day, the students gained valuable on-the-job experience outside of the classroom and were talking about it for the rest of the day.'
