Lancaster University Library soars to first place in national survey

We're delighted to hear that our client, Lancaster University Library has taken the top spot in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2017. The survey draws together the views of 15,876 students who rate their own university across 22 different categories.

Lancaster University Library stated,

'The refurbished Library opened its doors in early 2016 and has gone from strength to strength. Users love the modern study facilities and stunning environment, and attendance regularly exceeds 150% of pre-refurbishment peaks.'

For Director of Library Services Peter Maggs, the Library is central to the student experience. 'A good library, that is effective and supports teaching, learning and research, and offers a really innovative learning space, is something people see as central to the university.'

Lancaster Library Refurbishment

In June 2014, following a competitive tender process, Styles&Wood was appointed to refurbish the 14,500ft2 library facilities at Lancaster University. The 68-week programme focused on modernising the library to create an open plan library area, formal and informal study spaces, resources points, teaching space and group study rooms. The works involved stripping back the two wings of the library, creating a new atrium and the replacement of all windows.

The project was located on a busy university campus which accommodates 12,000 students and 2,500 members of staff. The campus also houses a variety of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars that had to be considered when planning the works.

The project was split into six phases to enable the library to keep areas operational throughout the project duration and it was delivered on time and achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating.
