Suez Cement : SCGC honors winners of 1st Quarry Life Award in Egypt

Suez Cement group of Companies is pleased to announce the winners of the 4th Quarry Life Award, which are organized for the first time in Egypt.

The competition is designed to raise awareness about the biological value in the company's quarries and sharing best ideas and practices with the scientific community, NGOs and government agencies at different levels with regard to the impact of excavations in the company's quarries on biodiversity.

Winners were announced today in a ceremony held at Helwan Cement's ballroom. The final shortlist included 6 candidates, 3 in the scientific research stream and three in the social stream.

In the scientific research competition, Dr. Iman Hamid Mehlal, Professor at the Desert Research Center, won the first prize and Dr. Mostafa Abdel-Khaleq, and the faculty of Science School, Beni Suef University, came second. In the social stream, Kafr el Elw School won the first place, while Mr. Amr Okasha, Deputy Editor of Wafd newspaper, came second. The prizes awarded totaled around EGP 350,000. Mr. Jose Maria Magrina, Chief Executive Officer of Suez Cement Group, said: 'The 1st QLA in Egypt has been very successful. We are very proud of the serious participation and enthusiasm we have found and enjoyed by the participating individuals and institutions and also by our employees' interaction with the competition. Through QLA, we are trying to increase awareness about the value of biodiversity at quarrying sites of the company. The jury consisted of a group of specialists, Prof. Dr. Hamdallah Zaidan, UN expert and Chairman of the Preparatory Committee for the United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity, Sharm el-Sheikh, November 2018, and Dr. Magdy Khalil, former head of the Department of Animal Science, Ain Shams University, Dr. Khaled Allam, Head of EEAA Central Department of Biodiversity, Mr. Jose Maria Magrina, SCGC Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Khalid Abdulaziz, SCGC Director of Quarrying Department.

The jury was responsible for selecting the best projects in terms of innovation and implementation for the QLA.
