Earthquake and hurricane illustrate Syniverse’s ability to support sudden traffic spikes, dynamically allocate resources and ensure 99.999 percent reliability

TAMPA, Fla. – Sept. 28, 2011 – In the first two hours following the Aug. 23 earthquake along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard, Syniverse processed more than 220 million SMS messages, a 15 percent spike from the same period one day earlier without interruption. Less than a week later in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, Syniverse again supported mobile operators’ SMS, MMS and roaming services in the affected areas without any disruption.

These back-to-back events are two of the latest examples of how Syniverse’s superior network design and infrastructure ensures mobile operators can maintain unmatched service reliability at all times, even during and after unforeseen disruptive events. Syniverse’s approach to business continuity is rooted in an active strategy of investment in preparedness, for both the network infrastructure and the Syniverse team members actively engaged in disaster planning and recovery.

“No one in our space in mobile can match Syniverse’s level of quality, redundancy, preparation and testing. This is what sets our carrier-grade reliability apart from less robust service offerings,” said Jeff Gordon, President and CEO. “In the face of a natural disaster, civil upheaval, pandemic or other major unforeseen event, Syniverse is ready to provide our customers the five-nines availability consumers, businesses and governments require.”

To address network preparedness, Syniverse has global command centers in Bangalore, India, and Tampa, Fla., which provide full georedundancy. The 9,300-mile separation virtually eliminates the possibility that disasters will strike both centers at the same time. Syniverse also has expanded 15 data centers worldwide in the past six years, providing additional flexibility to quickly shift computing resources to support sudden traffic spikes. In the United States, the company’s network includes hubs in Chicago and Dallas, which are both connected to 14 widely dispersed data centers on three continents. This redundant design, in which each operator customer connects to Syniverse’s data centers via several links, maintains service even in the unlikely event of multiple failures.

Further solidifying its network integrity is Syniverse’s own IPX backbone. This private, carrier-grade, Layer 3 Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)-enabled network allows for individual sites to be connected to the MPLS core in multiple, resilient ways, so the enhanced intelligence capabilities are able to automatically redirect traffic via an alternate route or site if necessary. This means if one site is inoperable, others can still maintain connection with instant, automatic rerouting – which is not always the case with alternate point-to-point connection options. The network also is monitored 24x7, 365 days per year by the Syniverse Command Center to ensure 100 percent system availability.

“Preparedness doesn’t stop with the network itself, which is why every Syniverse product and department has a specific business-continuity plan that ensures continuous service in the event of a disaster,” Gordon said. “These plans are tested regularly, with published testing schedules for each product and results reported each quarter. We also involve customers in our testing exercises to give them the utmost confidence in the Syniverse solutions on which they rely.”

In addition to supporting company initiatives, Syniverse executives have been tapped to support U.S. national efforts for emergency planning. Senior Vice President John Wick is a member of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Communications Security, Reliability, and Interoperability Council (CSRIC), and Chief Network Architect BJ Neal participates in the U.S. Emergency Response Interoperability Center (ERIC) Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC).
