Results from a recent study using stem cells to restore sight have just been published. The researchers used stem cells to grow new retinal tissue and then transplant it into mice suffering from terminal retinal degeneration.* More than 40% of the mice regained their ability to see light. From a clinical point of view, human eyes may have a different environment from that of mice. Further tests must be carried out to verify whether this technique can be used on humans.

* Age-related macular degeneration affects around 170 million people worldwide.
