Veidekke has received the BREEAM certificate which confirms sustainability certification at level Excellent for the railway project UDK02 in Drammen.

The project for Bane NOR received a score of 83.5%, the highest achieved for a construction project in Norway.

We are simply very proud of the excellent results we have achieved together with Bane NOR in Drammen. This complicated billion-dollar project was carried out without serious damage, under budget, it was delivered ahead of schedule and at the top we achieved a significantly better environmental and climate footprint than our joint objective, says director Neal Nordahl at Veidekke Anlegg.

The contract between Veidekke and Bane NOR was entered into in November 2019. The task was to build a 540-metre-long concrete culvert in an open construction pit and a subsequent 290-metre-long tunnel through loose masses in demanding ground conditions and into the mountain in Stromsasen, south of Drammen station. The parcel is part of Bane NOR's Inter-City project 'New double track Drammen-Kobbervikdalen' on the Vestfold Line, which will provide continuous double track and more trains between Oslo and Tonsberg.

We are very satisfied with the good result Veidekke has achieved. That more people take more trains is an important contribution to increased sustainability, and it is important to us that the construction work also becomes increasingly sustainable and climate-friendly. Therefore, we must continue to reach out together with the building and construction industry. Here, Veidekke and the development project in Drammen have set a good example, says development director Bettina Sandvin at Bane NOR.

BREEAM Infrastructure is a tool for documenting and promoting sustainability for various types of infrastructure projects such as roads, railways, bridges, landscape architecture and parks. Evidence-based assessment criteria and external verification are used to produce a result that can be published and used to measure sustainability in a project.

It is of course fun that we managed to set a new record, but I hope for the world's sake that the record is broken as soon as possible. The entire industry must take responsibility and constantly seek new and increasingly environmentally friendly ways of carrying out construction projects if we are to achieve our joint climate goals and fulfill our obligations, concludes Neal Nordahl.
