WAUKEGAN, Ill. - North Shore Gas customers who need help with their heating bills can apply for financial assistance from the company's Share the Warmth program during a special resource fair on Saturday, Feb. 6.

The fair, which will offer services from other organizations as well, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Erie HealthReach's Waukegan Health Center, 2323 Grand Ave.

'We understand some customers have difficulty keeping up with their monthly natural gas bills, especially during the coldest months of the year,' said Michelle Rindt, vice president - customer service. 'Last year, Share the Warmth helped nearly 1,000 North Shore Gas customers. We have funds available to assist twice as many customers this winter, so we're encouraging customers to apply and tell others about the program.'

Share the Warmth provides qualifying North Shore Gas customers with grants of up to $200 toward their natural gas bills. Income guidelines are available at northshoregasdelivery.com. To apply for a Share the Warmth grant at the resource fair, customers must bring:

  • Proof of household income or any financial assistance for the past 30 days for all members of the household over age 18; and
  • Their current residential heating bill.

Customers who attend the fair also can learn about rebates for high-efficiency products and sign up for North Shore Gas' Home Energy Jumpstart program. When you participate in Jumpstart, an energy adviser will perform a free home energy assessment and install free energy-saving products that may include programmable thermostats, showerheads, faucet aerators, pipe insulation, CFLs and smart power strips. Smart thermostats and LEDs are available for purchase at a discount through Jumpstart.

Organizations participating in the Feb. 6 resource fair include:

  • ElderCARE
  • Family First Center of Lake County
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Illinois Department of Human Services
  • Lake County Health Department
  • Waukegan Fire Department
  • Waukegan Public Library
  • YWCA Lake County
  • First Midwest Bank

Also in February, the natural gas charge for North Shore Gas customers will increase to approximately 38 cents, from approximately 35 cents in January. Despite the increase, the February 2016 natural gas charge will be about 14 percent lower than in February 2015. The natural gas charge includes the actual purchase cost, transportation and storage of natural gas, which can vary month to month. The natural gas charge is passed through to customers with no markup by North Shore Gas.
