LINTHICUM, Md. - Aetna (NYSE: AET) has announced the Maryland Department of Health has approved Aetna's participation in the Maryland Medicaid HealthChoice program. Aetna's Maryland Medicaid managed care plan is called Aetna Better Health of Maryland.

Medicaid beneficiaries who are eligible for HealthChoice, Maryland's Medicaid Managed Care program, now have the opportunity to sign up with Aetna Better Health of Maryland in Baltimore City and 12 counties - Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's and St. Mary's.

'Aetna Better Health is here to improve the health and lives of Maryland's Medicaid population,' said Angelo Edge, CEO of Aetna Better Health of Maryland. 'We look forward to working with the State of Maryland and its physicians, health systems and other providers to drive improvements in service delivery, the member experience, the quality of care and the health outcomes for the members we serve.'

In addition to standard Medicaid benefits, Aetna Better Health of Maryland will also offer eligible members $0 pharmacy copays and vision and eyewear benefits for adults. To combat childhood obesity, children between the age of 5 and 18 years old will be eligible for Aetna Better Health's Ted. E. Bear, M.D. Kids Club program, which will collaborate with the local YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs, Girl Scouts and Boy Scout Packs and the 4-H clubs to provide access to local youth recreational programs and centers. In addition to using Aetna Better Health of Maryland 's website and mobile app, members can receive assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week through Aetna Better Health of Maryland's Member Service department.
