Anthem, Inc. (NYSE: ANTM) today announced that Brian Griffin has been appointed to executive vice president and president, Commercial and Specialty Business, effective Sept. 1, 2015. Griffin succeeds Ken Goulet, who announced earlier this summer his intent to retire from Anthem after 11 years. Griffin will report directly to Joseph R. Swedish, President and Chief Executive Officer, Anthem, and will also serve as a member of the company’s Executive Leadership Team.

Griffin has more than 30 years of executive-level health care experience, and most recently served as the Commercial Plan President for Anthem’s affiliated health plan in New York and led Anthem’s enterprise-wide pharmacy business. Prior to joining Anthem, Griffin served as CEO of Medco International and also served as CEO of the Medco Celesio joint venture and as a member of Medco’s Executive, Management and Operating Committees for more than 13 years.

In his new role, Griffin is responsible for Anthem’s Local Group business, including state-based exchanges, individual, small group and large group business; National Accounts; and Specialty Products, including dental, vision, life, disability and workers’ compensation. He will also continue to lead Anthem’s Pharmacy Division.

“Brian has built an impressive record of accomplishment and is widely regarded throughout our organization for his commitment to meeting and exceeding the expectations of our members and ensuring access to high quality, affordable healthcare," said Mr. Swedish. "Brian's appointment is a result of our strong internal succession plan and our focus on the development of the talented leaders within our organization. In addition to welcoming Brian to Anthem’s executive leadership team, I would also like to thank Ken Goulet for his many contributions to our company and wish him the best in his well-deserved retirement.”
