SPOKANE, Wash. - Feb. 12, 2016: Avista recently provided the Idaho Department of Transportation (DOT) with an $85,411 rebate as part of their Lighting Energy Efficiency Rebate program. The project consisted of replacing over 500 light fixtures with LEDs along Interstate 90 from the borders of Washington to Montana. The main DOT campus on Prairie Avenue was also retrofitted with all new LED lighting. The new LED lighting is expected to save approximately 396,000 kWh annually, amounting to about $30,000 savings annually for taxpayers.

'Not only do LED lights provide for greater visual clarity for the driver, but they are much more efficient than the high pressure sodium lights that we have traditionally used,' said Ryan Hawkins, a traffic engineer for DOT. 'The Department is committed to becoming as efficient as possible and will compound our initial investment by using the rebates earned under these projects to fund additional LED installations.'

Avista provides about $12 million each year in rebates and incentives to help commercial customers save on energy. In 2015, the utility provider processed more than 300 commercial lighting rebate forms.

'The energy savings from this project alone is enough to power about 34 homes for 10 years,' said Avista account executive Sharmon Schmitt. 'We're excited to continue helping organizations like the Departments of Transportation make impactful strides toward energy conservation with this rebate program.'
