Recently, nameplate unveiling ceremony of Baosteel-Shanghai Maritime University 'Marine extreme environment steel material preparation and erosion control' joint laboratory was held in Shanghai Maritime University. Secretary of the party committee and dean of Baowu Central Authority Research Institute-Wu Jun and vice-chancellor of Shanghai Maritime University-Yan Weifen signed joint laboratory cooperation agreement on behalf of two sides. Shanghai Education Commission inspector-Jiang Hong, deputy direction of Linggang Area Development Administration-Wu Xiaohua, secretary of the party committee of Shanghai Maritime University-Jin Yongxing and deputy general manager of Baosteel-Zhi Xiwei unveiled the nameplate for joint laboratory together.

Shanghai Maritime University has a long-term friendly cooperation relations with Baosteel. Since 2012, the university has conducted close cooperation with Baosteel in respect of extreme marine environment materials research. With the promotion by the project of 'maval architecture and ocean engineering' construction of Shanghai Gaoyuan Discipline, both parties gave full play to their advantages of science and technology and jointly started systematic research and development for scale manufacture technology of high grade steel for the ship under extreme cold marine environment of China, successfully applied the project of '13thFive Year Plan' national key research and development plan 'Steel for the ship under extremely cold and ultra low temperature environment and its application'. Establishment of the joint laboratory provides a new development space and broader development platform for deep research and development of ocean ship and ocean engineering steel material, and filled the blank of the platform for school-enterprise joint research for domestic marine extreme environmental materials.

Jin Yongxing expressed that through the platform of joint laboratory, Shanghai Maritime University will further strengthen industry-university-research communication and cooperation with Baosteel, cultivate innovative talents of science and technology, jointly promote the development of Chinese marine extreme environmental steel materials, make new contributions to further management and planning of the ocean and promotion of marine power construction and construction of Shanghai Science and Technology Center.

Zhi Xiwei said in the speech that establishment of the laboratory under powerful combination of Baosteel and Shanghai Maritime University will certainly promote research and manufacturing of the steel for ships and ocean engineering under extreme marine environment. Baosteel will expand, deepen and speed up cooperation with Shanghai Maritime University, build the joint laboratory to be an international leading scientific research innovation platform, so as to provide better services for ocean strategy and maritime silk road construction of China.

According to the great demand for ship and marine steel material under extreme ocean environment, such as polar low temperature and high temperature hot waters of the South China Sea, and combining with the international development trend of the frontier, the joint laboratory will mainly conduct cooperation and research in respect of research and development of new marine engineering materials adaptable for extreme Marine environment, material damage mechanism under special marine environment and new surface protection technology for marine materials, etc.
