Our Defense & Aerospace division has quite some exciting news to reveal during this week's Farnborough Air Show. One of the highlights: the recent agreement with GE Aviation to jointly develop a new family of open system cockpit display products, targeted at display and avionic system applications for helicopters.

Trusted partners
GE Aviation has successfully delivered cockpit display systems for the UK Wildcat, Merlin and International AW159 helicopter display systems in the past, with Barco as its trusted partner on many occasions. Under the new agreement, Barco will combine its cockpit display design and manufacturing capability with the expertise of GE Aviation in thermal management, graphics processing, application development and computing, to create a low profile, passively cooled cockpit display system.

Open models
The cockpit products will host existing applications from both Barco and GE Aviation and be compatible with industry standard ARINC 653 and Barco's MOSArt application interfaces. By integrating them with an open suite of development and integration tools, aircraft prime contractors and application providers will be able to customize the functionality and optimize them to meet their needs.

Driving efficiency, cutting costs
Both Barco and GE Aviation are excited about the future collaboration. "We will be able to provide customers with the most advanced flight deck with embedded applications while driving efficiency and reducing the through-life cost of change," said Alan Caslavka, president of Avionics & Digital Systems for GE Aviation. Dave Scott, SVP Barco and General Manager of our Defense & Aerospace division added that he is "delighted to be working with GE Aviation on this innovation and to continue our fruitful co-operation in this area."
