Running an operating theater is no easy feat. Coordinating and running all parts of the surgical suite takes quick thinking, poise and pre-emptive planning.
In an environment that can be so demanding, video integration can help OR managers impose incremental improvements in OR utilization and efficiency, while managing the requirements of multiple specialties.
Independent healthcare research agency The MarkeTech Group asked OR managers about the specific capabilities that could help reduce their workload and increase efficiency. Here are the results:
Capabilities to reduce workload
Easy integration of medical devices (as indicated by 93% of respondents): simple integration of medical devices saves both time and resources. An easy plug-and-play system reduces the need for staff training and on-site assistance.
Remote diagnostics and data analytics (93%): a good video integration system enables remote diagnostics and data analytics, supporting easy maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment.
Server/PC access outside the OR (89%): being able to monitor and control the system remotely not only saves time in case of urgencies but also safeguards patient safety as there is no need to enter the sterile zone.
Fewer components (88%): having fewer components reduces the potential points of failure and leads to fewer elements to manage.
Capabilities to increase efficiency
Access to medical information, when and where you need it (89%): this includes access to information in and outside the OR to facilitate remote consultation and collaboration.
Simplified OR set-up (79%): navigation devices, displays, machine-controlled applications and PACS devices can be added or removed easily.
Centralized display of all information in the OR (73%): this eliminates the stress of segregated data and centralizes all information in the OR, ensuring that OR staff are equipped with the relevant information at the right time.
Unified cabling (59%): a universal cable connecting devices reduces cable clutter, minimizes errors, shortens the learning and adoption curve, and allows for easy expansion/modification.
Flexible sharing of imaging modalities (53%): with a high-bandwidth backbone, video integration can enable distribution of video and audio, without delay or the need to compress images.
