Mangalore, India - June 20, 2015 - BASF India Limited today inaugurated new Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities in two schools namely Shri Ramachandra High School, Perne and Government High School, Krishnapura in Mangalore in Karnataka, India. These facilities have also been established in eight other schools across Mangalore. The facilities will benefit more than 2,000 school children who will also undergo education sessions on hygiene and sanitation. This will help create awareness on efficacy, sustainability, and integration of hygiene and sanitation interventions among the school children. These facilities were funded by BASF India Limited under its CSR initiatives and were implemented successfully by Samhita Social Ventures and Leaf Society, a non-government organisation.

In 2014, BASF launched a program to strengthen the community's awareness and capacities towards WASH. By constructing WASH friendly facilities in government schools for girls and boys, BASF aims to fundamentally change and improve the attitudes, habits and behaviors of the community. The comprehensive program offers hand wash equipment, safe drinking water, proper waste segregation and disposal, menstrual management and behavioral change education to the school children. To aid physically challenged students, the facilities also include ramps and railings which are in accordance with World Health Organization's guidelines.

Mr. Purandara Shetty, Site Head - Mangalore Works, BASF India Limited said, "Our WASH program in Mangalore aims to educate children to be ambassadors in their communities for the importance of a healthy and hygienic society."

BASF has spearheaded a number of dedicated awareness programs among local communities in India on sanitation and hygiene. These are particularly aimed at promoting the importance of sanitation, and its link to environmental and health protection.
