First national title in men's soccer and six top-10 finishes help Cardinal take No. 1

McLean, Va. (July 6, 2016) - With a strong and consistent showing throughout the 2015-2016 collegiate sports season, Stanford University men's athletics program has secured its first-ever Capital One Cup. A national championship in men's soccer and six top-10 finishes throughout the year propelled the Cardinal to the top of the men's standings as they outlasted powerhouse programs from North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Clemson.

The Capital One Cup is awarded annually to the best men's and women's NCAADivision I college athletics programs for their cumulative on-field performance across multiple men's and women's sports. To recognize this accomplishment the Cardinal men's athletics program will join the women of the University of Southern California to receive a combined $400,000 in student-athlete scholarships and be recognized at The 2016 ESPYS on July 13. Both Stanford and USC compete in the Pac-12 conference, making this the first time that the Capital One Cup is being awarded to two athletic programs in the same conference.

The Cardinal laid the foundation in the fall for a successful climb to No. 1, which they'd ride throughout the athletic year and ultimately to victory. The men's cross country team put up Stanford's first Capital One Cup points of the academic year followed by a NCAA® Men's College Cup win for soccer, defeating Clemson 4-0 in the final. The victory was also followed by top-10 finishes in football and water polo. With continued excellence in the winter and spring seasons, the Cardinal went on to earn top-10 finishes in gymnastics, indoor track and field, and volleyball, enabling Stanford to remain steady at No. 1 and claim the Capital One Cup trophy with a total of 126 points. This win for the Cardinal men marks the fourth Capital One Cup trophy to be awarded to a Stanford athletics program; last year, the Cardinal women brought home their third Capital One Cup.

'It's uplifting to see our student-athletes receive this recognition and I laud their strength in juggling both academics and athletics,' said Stanford University Jaquish & Kenninger Athletics Director Bernard Muir. 'As a first for our men's athletics program, we proudly welcome this addition to the Capital One Cup trophies bearing the Stanford University name and would like to thank Capital One for its support of college athletics.'

Competition for the Capital One Cup

As Stanford continued to hold off contenders for the No. 1 position, the athletics programs in pursuit of the Capital One Cup put up fierce competition.

  • North Carolina finished second with 108 points earned from a national championship in lacrosse, a runner-up finish in basketball and top-10 finishes in soccer and tennis.
  • Ohio State took third with 80 points after capturing the men's volleyball title, combined with top-10 finishes in football, fencing, gymnastics, rifle, wresting and tennis.
