Inaugural NCAA® Beach Volleyball title helps clinch top spot for Trojans

McLean, Va. (July 6, 2016) - Catapulted by winning the national championships in water polo and beach volleyball, the University of Southern California's women's athletics program has captured the 2015-2016 Capital One Cup trophy for the first time ever. The top three teams - USC, Stanford, Penn State - were separated by only 12.5 points, the closest Capital One Cup competition since the program's launch in 2010.

The Capital One Cup, currently in its sixth year, recognizes NCAA Division I athletics programs for their cumulative on-field performance across multiple men's and women's sports. In recognition of this outstanding achievement, the Trojan women's athletics program will join the men of Stanford University to receive a combined $400,000 in student-athlete scholarships and be honored at The 2016 ESPYS on July 13. Both the Trojans and Cardinal compete in the Pac-12, making this the first year both Capital One Cup winners hail from the same conference.

USC kicked off the collegiate sports season with three top-10 finishes between fall and winter - volleyball, indoor track and field, and swimming and diving - landing at 17 place in the Capital One Cup standings. The Trojans turned up the heat in the spring earning two national titles in beach volleyball and water polo, along with top-10 finishes in golf, lacrosse and outdoor track and field, which propelled them to the No. 1 position. Points accumulated from these strong performances earned USC a total of 96 points, enough to surpass Stanford - last year's Capital One Cup champion - and Penn State, who took second and third places, respectively.

'We have always been proud of our women's athletics program and are excited to see it recognized as winners of the 2015-2016 Capital One Cup,' said USC Athletics Director Lynn Swann. 'As a first for our University, we are honored to receive this award and applaud our female athletes and coaching staff on this remarkable achievement. All of us at the University of Southern California would like to extend our gratitude to Capital One for its continued support of student-athletes.'

Competition for the Capital One Cup

With a new No. 1 contender emerging at the end of each athletic season, this year's race for the women's Capital One Cup was fiercer than ever.

  • Stanford earned a second place finish with 90 points as a result of a national championship in tennis as well as top-10 finishes in soccer, gymnastics, swimming and diving, golf, lacrosse, outdoor track and field, rowing and water polo.
  • Penn State's nationalsoccer title and top-10 finishes in volleyball, fencing and lacrosse helped secure them a third-place finish in the standings.
  • Rounding out the top-10 is North Carolina, Oklahoma and Syracuse (tied at 4), along with Nebraska (7), Connecticut (8), Texas (9) and Florida State (10).
