PLAINFIELD, IND. -

Duke Energy will hold its 18th annual bald eagle viewing day on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at its Cayuga electric power plant along the Wabash River, about 35 miles north of Terre Haute, Ind.

The event is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reservations are not necessary. 

"More than 23,000 have attended Eagle Viewing Days over the years," said Cayuga Station Manager Mike Wertz. "It's been an opportunity for visitors from around Indiana and the region to see and learn about our majestic national bird and symbol."

The American Eagle Foundation will be on hand again to present its "Eagle and Birds of Prey Program" at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The presentation includes captive live eagles.

Duke Energy also is sponsoring school presentations with the eagles. The American Eagle Foundation will be at Clay City Elementary School and Forest Park Elementary School in Clay County on Jan. 24, and at Mill Creek West Elementary School and Danville South Elementary School in Hendricks County on Jan. 25.

During most years, the area near Cayuga Station hosts the state's largest population of mid-winter migratory bald eagles. When area lakes and streams freeze over in the winter, warm water discharged from the Cayuga power plant keeps the river area by the plant ice free, which attracts fish on which the eagles feed. 

Eagle viewers should dress warmly and may want to bring binoculars, cameras and spotting scopes. In the event of bad weather, no backup day is planned.

The station can be reached by taking I-74 to State Road 63 and then traveling south about 15 miles, or by taking U.S. 36 to State Road 63 and then going north approximately 15 miles.
