PLAINFIELD, Ind. -- Whether it's a fire, tornado, flood or other natural disaster, the American Red Cross is always faithful to provide comfort, relief and resources to the victims of such disasters.

Such was the case this past July when the American Red Cross of West Central Indiana stepped up to meet the needs of victims of severe wind and thunderstorms that blew through Vigo County and surrounding areas. Red Cross volunteers provided shelter, food and clothing to the victims of these storms, helping ease their stress.

To recognize their efforts, and to provide support for future disaster needs, the Duke Energy Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to the American Red Cross of West Central Indiana.

'We're proud to partner with the American Red Cross as they reach out, time and time again, to help people in need,' said Melody Birmingham-Byrd, Duke Energy Indiana state president. 'It's one of the many ways we help support the communities we serve.'

'Being ready to respond before disaster strikes enables us to provide fast and meaningful relief to survivors in their times of greatest need,' said Allison Gammon, executive director of the American Red Cross of West Central Indiana. 'Our volunteers were trained, supplies were strategically placed and shelter agreements with community partners were established in advance. With partners like Duke Energy, we can prepare for whatever disaster may come our way.'
