San Donato Milanese (Milan), 14 May 2015 - Eni is taking part in the "Access to Energy in Africa' seminar in Milan, organised by World Access to Modern Energy (WAME). It plans to take advantage of the opportunity created by Expo Milan 2015 and wants the general public to become aware of the problems posed by large parts of the world's population not having access to energy. It also hopes to shed light on the many groups around the world taking up the challenge.

Roberto Casula, Chief Development, Operations & Technology Officer of Eni will be the speaker in a session titled "The contribution of cooperation to the development challenge in Africa: The voice of the people engaged in increasing access to energy". Eni works primarily with local communities, NGOs, local governments of the countries it operates in and the United Nations. Cooperation creates a healthy cycle of access to energy and is a fundamental prerequisite for economic and social growth in developing countries.

Eni was the first international energy company to invest in electricity generation in Africa and reduce its environmental footprint. The company has worked on important projects promoting access to energy through the use of natural gas in Nigeria and the Congo with additional agreements signed in Ghana and Mozambique.

The difficulty in accessing modern forms of energy, especially in African countries, has been recognised as a serious social problem, as it often prevents the supply of clean water and food, affecting health and hygiene and reducing opportunities for progress. Along with vast areas of South-East Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa is another region where access to modern energy (electricity and clean fuel for cooking) is lacking. At the moment, the energy sector in Africa is unable to keep up with development and satisfy the requirements and aspirations of the inhabitants.

Eni is a founding member of WAME together with Expo 2015 and eight major Italian and European energy companies including A2A, Edison, Enel, E.ON Italia, Gas Natural Italia, Gdf Suez, Energia Italia and Tenaris. Eni will make its best practices and its technologies on the issue of access to energy available to the WAME and Expo2015.It will also seek to encourage the use of best practices throughout the channels and networks it belongs to.

Eni is also contributing by taking part in scientific endeavours and providing operational assistance to the project of the Eni Enrico Mattei Foundation Research Institute. It aims to contribute with studies, policy-making,training and information initiatives, thus furthering knowledge on challenges concerning sustainability at the local and global level, with special emphasis on energy issues.
