Central insurance database continues to combat uninsured driving and protect innocent drivers

Nottingham, UK, 27 February 2014 - Experian®, the global information services company, has today announced a five year renewal of its partnership with the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) to maintain the Motor Insurance Database (MID), the central record of all motor policies in the UK.

The MID is one of the insurance industry's key databases and is successfully used to combat uninsured driving through partners working with MIB.  Partners include the police, who seize vehicles being driven without insurance and the DVLA, which issues fines and penalties to keepers of vehicles without insurance.

The contract was secured by Experian following a full review and invitation to tender exercise by the MIB.  In continuing to host the database, which contains about 37 million records, Experian will also create a bespoke business intelligence solution.  This will enable the MIB to interrogate the effectiveness and integrity of the database and monitor the continued reduction in uninsured driving, as well as providing valuable management information to insurers.

In addition, a programme of work will begin in advance of the contract start date in 2015, to deliver speed and efficiency improvements, including a self-service web portal for insurers to manage their access.

Jo Buxton, General Manager for Insurance at Experian, added: "We are proud to support a service that helps to reduce uninsured driving and protects the honest policy holder.  The new contract will see the database enhanced to support the requirements of the MIB as they develop, as well as their vision for the future."

Ashton West, Chief Executive at MIB said: "The Motor Insurance Database is a vital asset for the industry and plays a central role in addressing the issue of uninsured driving in the UK.  This was a closely fought tender exercise and our decision to continue to work with Experian was based on a number of factors, but particularly their knowledge of us and our members, the overall contract value and ensuring any development of the MID has a minimal impact on the industry. The partnership with Experian over the coming years is expected to yield further technological improvements in the maintenance of the database and its ongoing value to the industry, enforcement agencies and motoring public."

Experian has worked with the MIB for the last 12 years, enabling over 100 members and almost 40 delegated authorities across the private and commercial motor market to upload policy and vehicle records to the MID.

The database handles nearly 12,000 changes every hour and in 2013 supported nearly 70 million enquiries from the police, DVLA, public and solicitors.

The MIB's main remit is compensating the innocent victims of accidents with uninsured and untraced drivers. It also aims to reduce the level of uninsured driving using technology-driven services to the industry and enforcement partners.
