Dr. Thomas Wedlick, Managing Engineer in Exponent's Mechanical Engineering practice, will present the Climbing Wall Association's (CWA) new Work-at-Height standard at the Climbing Wall Association Summit. The 2017 CWA Summit will take place in Loveland, CO from May 18 - 20, 2017. The CWA Summit, now in its 11th year, is the annual conference of the Climbing Wall Association, a trade association for climbing equipment and wall manufacturers, climbing facility owners and operators, and others in the climbing industry.
Climbing facility employees perform tasks, such as route setting, that might be considered 'work-at-height.' This presentation motivates the need to consider relevant 'work-at-height' safety requirements and reviews the newly developed CWA Work-at-Height Standard. The standard's intent is to help employers develop managed work-at-height programs for climbing settings that comply with existing legal requirements. This includes identifying, evaluating, and controlling the risks and hazards related to work-at-height in a climbing facility by selecting appropriate systems and procedures.
Dr. Thomas Wedlick is a corresponding member of the UIAA Safety Committee, which is a panel of experts who develop international safety standards for climbing and mountaineering equipment that are adopted by nearly 60 manufacturers and 2,000 products. Dr. Wedlick is also a voting member of the Climbing Wall Association's (CWA) Work-at-Height standard committee. The CWA is an international trade organization for climbing equipment manufactures and climbing facility operators.
