Faurecia shapes the future of the automobile in Shanghai

Present at the Shanghai Motor Show from 20 to 29 April (Hall N5 / Booth B013), Faurecia unveils its vision of the car of tomorrow. The solutions and concepts presented reflect the Group's desire to participate in the emergence of lighter vehicles, more economical and increasingly comfortable and personalized. The world's sixth largest automotive equipment supplier is betting on differentiation by technology and its strong position in the premium segment.

The car of tomorrow by Faurecia

Faurecia introduces in Shanghai a full range of products and concepts representative of the three themes chosen for the most important Chinese auto show:
- Materials and technologies for greener cars: Faurecia introduces the Exhaust Heat Recovery Manifold (EHRM), designed specifically for gas-electric hybrids. It integrates the heat recovery function in the exhaust manifold. This device captures heat directly from the engine, rather than down the line in the exhaust system, so it is able to collect a greater proportion of the exhaust heat than other systems can, while operating more efficiently. This solution is already available on the Ford Fusion in North America and on the Ford C-Max hybrid.
- Individual comfort and style: Faurecia has created a new generation of premium seats, integrating a wealth of technologies offering optimized individual comfort. The Urban Rhythm seat concept is, for example, a thin seat introducing a complete dynamic system that moves with occupants as they ride, constantly tuning its shape and support for exceptional comfort and command of the driving experience. Its highly innovative seatback offers 7 cm of additional legroom for rear passengers in a vehicle cabin of identical volume.
- Premium leadership: the interior of the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is heavily loaded with innovations developed by Faurecia for the instrument panel, door panels and center console. The use of leather, the "cut-and-sew" know-how, the use of natural materials such as wood in the door panels are all examples of technological leadership for vehicle interiors.

Faurecia, partner of premium brands

In 2012, premium automakers accounted for 28% of product sales of Faurecia, while they accounted for only 9% of the global automotive production. The Group also derives 40% of its product sales from German brands which dominate this segment. Audi is also Faurecia's first premium customer, alone it represented more than 11% of its product sales last year, or € 1.5 billion.
Sign of the strong position of the world's sixth largest automotive equipment supplier with premium brands, the top 30 vehicles equipped by Faurecia includes 16 premium vehicles, representing around 25% of product sales, or € 3.3 billion in 2012.
Its four activities (Faurecia Automotive Seating, Faurecia Interior Systems, Faurecia Emissions Control Technologies et Faurecia Automotive Exteriors) all have a strong premium positioning. The Group clearly has an edge with a portfolio of high added-value products and solutions, synonymous with comfort, perceived quality and performance, without compromising safety.

The challenge of differentiation by technology

Faurecia's innovation strategy is built around three pillars: environmental performance, reducing fuel consumption (mainly through lightweighting) and customized solutions for comfort and style to help better differentiate cars. The Group's innovations are based in particular on new materials, the development of new industrial processes and the integration of new connectivity features.

Press Release

Illustration of the momentum generated by the Group, R&D expenses increased 30% in 2012, to reach € 943 million of gross expenditure (5.4% of sales). 460 patents were filed against 300 in 2011. Today, there are 5,500 engineers and technicians in 30 R&D centers across the world, which feed the Group's technological expertise.
In China, Faurecia relies on its engineering footprint. In 2016, the Group will have 1,200 engineers in China, against 600 today. Shanghai is the center of gravity of its engineering footprint, with the inauguration in the coming months, of a new complex dedicated to Automotive Seating, Interior Systems and Automotive Exteriors. The Emissions control technology activity relies on its TechCenter located Shanghai (Minbei) which has been operational since April 2011. The R&D expertise has been refined in 2012 with the launch of a new joint venture with the University of Changchun, Jilin Province and the Xuyang Group.
