FIRST was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology. The FIRST World Championship was later developed to allow STEM students the forum to showcase their skills and learn the value of teamwork.
And the competition has steadily grown each year. This year's event in St. Louis, MO, featured over 20,000 kindergarten through high school students from 39 countries around the world. While it's a spectacle of intense competition, it's also one of collaboration across teams, where new friendships are developed.
FedEx has supported FIRST since 2002 through employee volunteering, coaching and mentoring, engaging students with the FedEx Innovation Challenge and providing shipping for more than 12 million pounds of robots to and from the competition.
