Scope of the Strategic Alliance

The compelling reasons for Ford and Volkswagen to explore a strategic alliance include the need to gain a competitive edge and explore possibilities of working together on several projects. Prominent among them is the joint development of a range of commercial vehicles to cater to the evolving needs of global customers. The Companies can also team up on several other projects but have not shared details. The Companies will be providing updates and additional information as they make progress on the strategic alliance.

Both Companies have clarified that the collaboration is strictly for improving competitiveness and efficiency, and does not include any share transaction or possibilities for cross equity investments.

Management Quotes

Commenting on the signing of the MOU with Volkswagen, Jim Farley, President of Global Markets, Ford, said:

"Ford is committed to improving our fitness as a business and leveraging adaptive business models, which include working with partners to improve our effectiveness and efficiency. This potential alliance with the Volkswagen Group is another example of how we can become more fit as a business while creating a winning global product portfolio and extending our capabilities."

Dr. Thomas Sedran, Head of Volkswagen Group Strategy, stated:

"Both Companies have strong and complementary positions in different commercial vehicle segments already. To adapt to the challenging environment, it is of utmost importance to gain flexibility through alliances. This is a core element of our Volkswagen Group Strategy 2025. The potential industrial cooperation with Ford is seen as an opportunity to improve competitiveness of both Companies globally."

Volkswagen had partnered with Daimler AG for several years for developing commercial vehicles. Daimler made Volkswagen's Crafter van, which was quite similar to Daimler's Mercedes-Benz Sprinter model. However, Volkswagen's partnership with Daimler ended when their contract expired in 2016. In October 2017, Volkswagen had indicated that it is exploring opportunities to partner with other automotive Companies for developing commercial vehicles.

Incidentally, BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford, and Volkswagen, along with Audi and Porsche signed an MOU in November 2016 for creating a large network for power charging stations across Europe to promote the use of electric vehicles.
