GAS NATURAL FENOSA wants to step up the gasification of the Balearic Islands in order to convert several towns to this clean, economical and efficient energy, particularly in areas that do not have this energy supply yet.

  • The distribution company has presented authorisation projects to gasify 25 municipalities of the islands of Minorca, Majorca and Ibiza, with over 118,000 potential customers.
  • Gas Natural Distribución is the leading company in gas distribution in Spain. It currently has over 5.17 million supply points and 47,600 kilometres of network all over the country. In 2013, it invested 279 million euros in the construction and maintenance of gas infrastructures.

Gas Natural Distribución's East Area Director, Juan Manuel Belda, the Gas Promotion director of the distribution affiliate, Alfredo Ingelmo, and the delegate for supply to new towns in the East Area, Robert Gauxax, today explained the gas distribution company GAS NATURAL FENOSA's plans to promote gasification in the Balearic Islands in the years to come.

Gas Natural Distribución, the distribution affiliate of GAS NATURAL FENOSA, is planning to invest over 42 million euros until 2020 in order to take the natural gas supply to 25 municipalities in the Balearic Islands. Up to now, the company has presented authorisation projects to gasify 25 municipalities of the island of Majorca, a town on the island of Ibiza and 8 municipalities on the island of Minorca.

The energy multinational, which presently has no distribution activity in the autonomous community, is studying the implementation of different projects to supply this energy to the community's population, and, in particular, taking natural gas to new areas that do not have this energy supply yet, as in the case of the island of Minorca.

Over 118,000 potential customers in 25 municipalities

The distributor is thereby committed to starting up its engagement with the Balearic Islands which will allow it to provide services, in the initial phase, to 118,000 potential customers in these 25 municipalities. On the island of Majorca, the towns for which the distribution affiliate has presented authorisation projects for gasification are Alcúdia - Port d'Alcúdia - Platja d'Alcúdia, Capdepera-Cala Rajada, Pollença-Port de Pollença, Llucmajor, Portocolom (Felanitx), Felanitx, Sa Pobla, Soller i Port de Soller, Portocristo (Manacor), Cala d'Or (Santanyí), Muro, Campos, Artà, Campanet, Benisalem, Consell and Santa María del Camí.

On the island of Minorca the municipalities are Maó, Ciutadella, Es Castell, Alaior, Mercadal, Sant Lluis and Migjorn Gran; while on the island of Ibiza the only town to date is Santa Eulàlia des Riu.

Gas Key for Economic Revitalisation and Industrial Competitiveness

Gas distribution activity continues to play a key role in industrial competitiveness and in economic revitalisation. The gas sector, currently representing 0.5% of GDP in Spain, generates around 150,000 jobs across the value chain, from transport and distribution to the provision of services to end customers.

Gas plays a major role in terms of industrial competitiveness, enabling industries of all types to make savings on their energy bills and to contribute to reducing greenhouse gases through low emissions. Hence, for example, a medium-sized business with a consumption of 2,000 MWh/year of diesel can save up to 40% a year if it starts to consume natural gas. Also, single-family houses with an average consumption of 15 MWh/year of diesel could save around 600 euros/year on the energy bills converting to natural gas.

Gas Natural Distribución's model has a growth hallmark that helps to streamline the local activity of installation companies under non-discriminatory criteria, directed at all companies, regardless of their turnover or area of activity.
