Together with another Spanish company, the multinational energy company leads the utilities sector within the highest category of the Climate Performance Leadership Index (CPLI) 2014.

  • The index, which replaces the old CDP Global 500 Climate Change Report, awards Level A status - the highest score possible - to 187 companies around the world for their efforts to mitigate climate change.

For the fourth straight year, GAS NATURAL FENOSA has received the highest score possible ("A" classification) on the Climate Performance Leadership Index (CPLI), which analyses conduct in the field of climate change by major companies at an international level. The energy company is one of the 187 companies around the world to have received this score and therefore be included on The A List. GAS NATURAL FENOSA has formed part of the CPLI since 2011.

The company has been recognised for its investments in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, its corporate approach to the identification of risks and opportunities, and its strategic long-term vision vis-à-vis climate change.

The index highlights the investments made by these companies that form part of the A list: together, they have achieved a reduction of 33 million tonnes of CO2 on the previous year, of which 5% (1.7 million tonnes) can be accounted for by the steps taken by GAS NATURAL FENOSA.

Furthermore, GAS NATURAL FENOSA leads the utilities sector alongside another Spanish company.

The A List drawn up by the CPLI replaces the old CDP Global 500 Climate Change Report and is based on information provided by almost 2,000 companies. The report recognises the measures adopted by the various participating companies to reduce emissions and mitigate the risks of climate change, while also evaluating the positive economic results. The CDP, which represents 767 institutional investors with over 92 trillion dollars in assets, is a non-profit international organisation that leads the way in terms of measuring corporate information on climate change.

The multinational energy firm is a leader in its field

The high level of the company's reporting makes it one of the most exhaustive when it comes to communicating environmental information to the market and in terms of transparency on the impact its energy activities have on the environment. In fact, CDP awarded the top spot on its Iberia125 Index to GAS NATURAL FENOSA in both 2012 and 2013, which includes the largest companies in Spain and Portugal. The company also received the highest score in 2013, making it the best utility company and a global leader for its conduct in terms of transparency and its actions to reduce the impact of climate change.

Policy to combat climate change

The result of the indices demonstrates GAS NATURAL FENOSA's commitment to the environment. CDP highlights the company's strategic focus and responsibility in all matters related to climate change: its capacity to measure and manage its carbon footprint and its transparency practices when reporting to the company's different stakeholders. This index also highlights the existence of external verification for climate change-related data and publication of this information.

For many years, the multinational energy firm has developed a corporate culture of respect for and awareness of the environment, which is continually transferred to employees, customers, suppliers and society in general. Along the same lines, GAS NATURAL FENOSA has now incorporated a commitment to biodiversity preservation into the development of all its businesses and activities.
