• The Fungastic educational programme, promoted with the support of the Gas Natural Fenosa Foundation, seeks to spread knowledge on energy use and the values of natural gas in a fun and educational way.

Earlier today, Gas Natural Distribución, in collaboration with the Gas Natural Fenosa Foundation, launched the travelling educational programme Fungastic in Huelva, an initiative that promotes knowledge, culture and awareness about the responsible use of natural gas. The name of the Fungastic programme refers to the three main pillars of the initiative: fun, gas energy and new technologies applied to education.

This initiative, in which more than 36,000 primary and secondary schoolchildren throughout Spain will participate, consists of several educational activities adapted to different ages which have been designed to identify energy use, learn to be more efficient, and gain an understanding of the important natural energy resource that is natural gas. These activities are prepared with an eye towards new educational classroom methods, where experimentation and hands-on experience are key.

After the programme, students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge about this energy in a drawing contest among schools and on Instagram.

Fungastic is a travelling programme which will tour more than 100 Spanish municipalities during the next four school years. Between now and June, more than 4,000 students in Andalusia, Castile-La Mancha and the Autonomous Community of Madrid will participate in the project, and in upcoming years the initiative will travel to schools in Castile-Leon, Catalonia, the Valencia Region, Galicia, La Rioja and Navarre.

Activities and challenges

During the next four school years, Gas Natural Distribución will organise nearly 370 participatory educational sessions adapted to different ages and given by specialised teachers.

Students from 1st to 4th year of primary school (6 to 10 years old) will participate in several dynamics that seek to raise their awareness about the limits of energy resources. They will learn best practices for cooking, becoming aware of their consumption and how to be more efficient, will enjoy the comfortable heat provided by natural gas, and will learn how this energy can improve the air we breathe.

Students in 5th and 6th years of primary school and in secondary school (11 to 16 years old) will be given a four-part puzzle, in the style of an escape room, on the origin, transport, uses and best practices of natural gas. To make it through this challenge they will have to use technologies like smartphones and virtual reality goggles.

The Gas Natural Fenosa Foundation has vast experience with educational activities through its Gas Museum. This cultural centre, opened in 2012, has a schedule of educational activities for all ages in which more than 56,000 students and around 500,000 users have taken part.
