Gold Fields Ghana provides sponsorship for reconstructive surgery

Accra, October 2016: Gold Fields Ghana Limited (GFGL), the country's largest gold producer, has partnered with the Greater Works Restoration Foundation (GWRF), an NGO, to provide free reconstructive surgery for 74 individuals in the Ashanti Region.

The reconstructive project was carried out for adults and children who were afflicted with either acquired or congenital anomalies, such as severe burns, cleft palate, contractures, and tumours, among others. Most of the patients, unfortunately, are unable to afford restorative surgeries due to the high cost of such medical procedures. GWRF, which is made up of Ghanaian medical professionals and surgeons, collaborates with the Graft Foundation to conduct these surgeries from time to time, free of charge.

Gold Fields Ghana covered over a quarter of the total cost involved in undertaking the procedure for the patients.

The company's Vice President for Corporate Affairs, Mr David Johnson, explained that Gold Fields has a strong focus on developing human capacities, which includes the provision of quality education and healthcare, especially in underserved communities. He said, 'the company is highly impressed with GWRF's commitment to transforming individuals to a state of greater functionality and emotional stability. This commitment aligns with our own strong belief that corporate organisations and institutions have a key role to play in helping to reduce poverty, promote economic growth, and enhance the quality of life of people. Gold Fields has invested significantly in these areas, and continues to do so'

Dr. Paa Ekow Hoyte-Williams, a reconstructive plastic and burns surgeon and founder of the GWRF, expressed immense appreciation to Gold Fields for the company's generous support. He said, 'surgical services is one of the most expensive medical services in the field of health, and having Gold Fields' support for this project has contributed substantially in helping us restore a sense of self-worth, dignity and confidence in the patients.

Gold Fields, through the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF), has spent approximately 120 million GHS on community development projects and programs, including healthcare programs and infrastructure. Clinics, community health centres, and residential facilities for health personnel have been built by GFGF to promote quality healthcare delivery in the company's stakeholder communities, whiles various health programs have also been undertaken for community residents.
