Friday's shopping bonanza will see us treating ourselves rather than others ahead of the season of giving

Three quarters of people plan to make personal purchases this Black Friday new research from Hammerson's shopping centres reveals.*

As Black Friday looms, shoppers across the UK are preparing to kick start their Christmas shopping by bagging a bargain. However, Hammerson shopping centres have found that Brits are in fact planning on treating themselves rather than loved ones, with 73% revealing that they will be in the market for personal purchases rather than presents this Friday.

Top on the lust list is clothing, with almost half of the nation (45%) citing a fashion item as their priority purchase for Black Friday, followed by technology and gadgets (27%) and watches, handbags and accessories (11%).

With bargains too good to resist, shoppers in the UK are planning on spending more than just their pocket money as this US phenomenon crosses the pond. A quarter (25%) of the nation are planning to splurge £500 or more on Black Friday discounts, with over half of Brits expecting discounts of at least 50 per cent on their most-coveted items.

Shoppers are expected to flock to Hammerson's shopping centres nationwide, which include Bullring, Birmingham, Brent Cross, London and Highcross in Leicester, to hunt down the bargains, with doors opening an hour earlier than usual to provide even more shopping time.

Martin Plocica, Director UK Shopping Centres  commented, "Over the past couple of years, Black Friday has made its way over to the UK and, this year, we expect it to be bigger than ever, marking the start of the festive shopping period. Across the entire Hammerson portfolio, retailers will have fantastic deals on offer.

"Our research shows that, despite Christmas being the season for giving, people are using the good value offers available on Black Friday as an excuse to treat themselves, and we anticipate shoppers will be making the most of the discounts across technology, electronics, fashion and accessories."
