June 21 marks National Aboriginal Day in Canada, a day to recognize the unique heritage, cultures and contributions of Aboriginal people in Canada - First Nations, Inuit and Métis alike.

Since the beginnings of our company, Horizon North has committed to meeting with members of Aboriginal and local communities in our operating areas to encourage discussion and information exchange on potential local impact and opportunities. It has always been our goal to create real value by building strong relationships that provide economic and employment benefits for Aboriginal communities and maximize the amount of local participation in our operations.

Our success in building meaningful relationships is represented by our 24 existing partnerships with communities across western and northern Canada:

  • 10 partnerships in British Columbia;
  • 6 in Alberta;
  • 4 in the Northwest Territories;
  • 2 in Nunavut; and
  • 1 each in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

With these partnerships as the building blocks, we are proud that 15 per cent of our Horizon North employees self-identify as a person of Aboriginal descent. At Jansen Discovery Lodge in Saskatchewan, 45% of employees are Aboriginal.

Simply put, our business would not be as strong as it is today if not for the contributions of our Aboriginal partners and employees.

Progressive Aboriginal Relations

As a Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) Committed company, Horizon North tracks and manages our Aboriginal Relations strategies, submitting an annual report to the Canadian Council of Aboriginal Business (CCAB) that documents a year's worth of activities, with an external verification of performance.

The four PAR drivers are Leadership Actions, Employment, Business Development and Community Relationships. Recognized performance in each of these areas signals that companies are good business partners, great places to work, and committed to prosperity in Aboriginal communities.

Explore our website for more about our commitment to Aboriginal relationships and all of the communities where we work.
