Statement on UK Plain Packaging

11 March, 2015

Imperial Tobacco notes the outcome of the vote on plain packaging in the House of Commons and the fact that before becoming law, it still needs to pass through the House of Lords.

Axel Gietz, Director of Group Corporate Affairs, said:

"We have long been making the point that plain packaging legislation would be a big mistake.

"No-one starts or continues to smoke because of the colour of the pack. We know from the real-world experience in Australia that it won't change consumption trends or reduce youth smoking but will play into the hands of criminals who profit from illicit trade.

"We have a fundamental right to differentiate our brands from those of our competitors and, should plain packaging pass into law, we would regrettably be left with no choice but to defend our legal rights in court."
