New landmark for Zurich North - Implenia celebrates topping-out of the Andreasturm | A more efficient construction thanks to Building Information Modelling (BIM)

Dietlikon, 1 December 2017 - Implenia, its client SBB Immobilien and anchor tenant Amstein + Walthert AG met up on Thursday to celebrate the topping out ceremony for the Andreasturm next to Oerlikon station in Zurich. The 80-metre-high tower has 21 floors and offers around 20,000 m2 of office space. There will be a staff canteen for the anchor tenant and a conference area on the first floor, while the ground floor will be given over to shops and food outlets. Standing right next to the platforms and the station underpass, the Andreasturm could not have better access to Switzerland's sixth largest railway station, with its high-frequency local and long-distance connections.

Proximity to the tracks did, however, present challenges when building this newest addition to Zurich North's skyline. The trains are kept running throughout the entire construction period, which made great demands on those responsible for safety and logistics. The tower has been built using the modern "top-down" construction technique. With this complex method, the floors beneath the concrete ceiling of the second basement level are built at the same time as the above-ground storeys. While concrete work was still underway on the upper sections of the tower, façade elements were already being mounted on the lower storeys. Adherence to the principles of lean management meant that all this happened precisely on schedule. Implenia used Building Information Modelling (BIM) consistently throughout the whole Andreasturm project, from initial planning to execution. Using this model-based approach allows Implenia to improve construction processes and coordinate the various trades more efficiently. The Andreasturm has been built to fulfil the requirements of the "DGNB Platinum" label, as adapted by the Swiss Sustainable Building Council (SGNI), and therefore meets the high sustainability standards set by Implenia, the client and the anchor tenant.

Implenia and client SBB Immobilien hold a topping-out ceremony for the 80-meter-high Andreasturm in Zurich North. Dr. Thomas Rinas, Overall Project Manager for the Andreasturm at SBB Immobilien, Jens Vollmar, Head of Business Unit Implenia Buildings , and Christian Appert, CEO of Amstein + Walthert, celebrate the punctual achievement of another milestone.
