Company Achieves Carbon Neutrality;Works to Further Reduce Emissions Around the World

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - April 20, 2016 -Intuit Inc. (Nasdaq: INTU) released an update on its progress in sustainability today, documenting its successful efforts to achieve carbon neutrality and outlining its goals toward becoming one of the world's leading sustainable companies.

'We've made notable progress since issuing our first sustainability report in 2011,' said Scott Beth, executive sponsor of Intuit's sustainability efforts. 'Just as we strive to 'deliver awesome' in our products and services, we're committed to doing the same through our corporate social responsibility initiatives. These efforts are more than just a business practice - they're part of our culture.'

Intuit is dedicated to growing its business in a sustainable manner, minimizing its impact on the environment. The company's sustainability efforts span the globe, and its progress and goals fall into four categories: Operating Responsibly, Targeting its Indirect Impact, Offsetting its Footprint, and Enabling Employee Sustainability.

  • Operating Responsibly: Intuit achieved carbon neutrality in 2015 through a combination of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and purchasing carbon offsets. The company is working to further reduce emissions and in 2014 set a goal to reduce emissions by 20 percent by 2020. It surpassed that goal in early 2016 through a combination of programs that included investing in renewable energy, increasing energy efficiency in its buildings and working with its data center partners.
  • Targeting its Indirect Impact: These efforts help to reduce emissions beyond those that Intuit is directly responsible for, such as creating a more sustainable supply chain and reducing employee travel. Intuit has reduced its physical supply chain footprint by 41 percent since 2009. This is due to online product growth as well as working with companies that provide concentrated data storage with flexibility, efficiency at a scale and a commitment to renewable electricity. In additional, all product packaging uses 100 percent recycled materials. In addition, Intuit employees are spending less time in the air as part of the company's programs to reduce travel. Since August 2015, the company reported a 32 percent decrease in emissions due to travel.
  • Offsetting its Footprint: In addition to reducing its own emissions, Intuit supports projects that prevent the release of greenhouse gases. In 2015, the company invested in 10 offset projects that helped to provide cleaner air in India, healthier drinking water in Guatemala and promote sustainable farming methods and infrastructure development in Madagascar, Borneo and Brazil.
  • Enable Employee Sustainability: Intuit also embraces sustainability outside the workplace. It offered a program for employees to install home solar panels at a reduced price, and provided early adopters $500 toward their system. Within six months, nearly 100 employees began installing solar panels on their homes. In addition, Intuit encourages employees to reduce electrical consumption by installing LEDs in their homes. In San Diego alone, an employee coordinated an event that resulted in the purchase of 1,560 Energy Star LEDs, saving 86,310 kilowatt-hours of electricity.

'While we're ahead of the game in certain areas, there is still a lot of work ahead of us,' Beth said. 'As our business grows, our global footprint and corporate responsibility efforts must evolve as well. Everything we say and do must reflect our commitment and responsibility of reducing our environmental footprint.'
