Reports offer insight and best practices to help law firm leaders manage compliance and risk

BOSTON - August 24, 2017 - As the adoption and stewardship of information governance (IG) becomes ever more critical for law firms, the Law Firm Information Governance Symposium today announced the availability of the latest in a series of new reports on Information Governance best practices. Published by Iron Mountain® Incorporated (NYSE: IRM), the global leader in storage and information management services, these reports will help law firm information leaders address key issues and challenges that they face in managing their firms' and clients' information compliantly and effectively.

'We are very excited about the release of this year's reports,' said Charlene Wacenske, senior manager, Morrison & Foerster LLP, and a member of the Symposium steering committee. 'We've addressed evolving issues that have begun to take more significant shape. And as with previous years, the reports highlight what can be accomplished by peers within the legal vertical working together to help the entire community with practical and timely advice about information governance.'

The reports are the result of months of collaborative study and discussion. Chartered by the Symposium's steering committee, the report authors participated in subject-matter task forces, culminating in the Law Firm Information Governance Symposium held in Boston, Mass. earlier this year.

The three reports highlight:

  • Creative sourcing for law firm information governance - Law firm leaders are under constant pressure to reduce costs, increase productivity and grow their client base. This report discusses creative and efficient solutions that leverage existing resources to achieve these goals.
  • Governance in the cloud - There are many reasons to use the cloud-based services (such as storage, application hosting and others) in a law firm. This report looks at the impact and application of IG when using cloud services, including how to identify ethics and compliance requirements and communicate them to firm personnel.
  • Defensible disposition - Defensible disposition (i.e., destroying information legally and according to policy) is a critical component to managing costs and risk, and an important element of law firm IG policies and procedures. In this report, readers receive guidance on implementing a defensible disposition program and learn about other elements - particularly technology solutions - that can help in this process.

'The Law Firm Information Governance Symposium members have done much over the last six years to help law firms acknowledge and advance their information governance, but it is a continuous process and there's always more work to do,' said Sue Trombley, managing director of Thought Leadership at Iron Mountain. 'We've seen this evolution firsthand at our symposium, where the industry's leading IG minds drive the discussion around issues like staff resources, data management, technology solutions, and the continued emphasis on security and information protection. We're proud to publish the reports, helping to guide law firms' responsible and compliant governance of client and firm information, and, alongside the Symposium members, better anticipating and addressing new and evolving issues each year.'
