As NBA great Wilt Chamberlain once said, 'Everybody pulls for David, nobody roots for Goliath.' This has never been truer than on Small Business Saturday.

Since its inception in 2010, this annual celebration of American independent retailers, founded by American Express, has exploded in both size and popularity. During last year's event, 88 million shoppers sided with the retail Davids on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

This year's Small Business Saturday, November 28, is a great time for your operation to put its best foot forward with customers old and new. Take these three simple steps to make the most of the extra attention:

Step #1: Clean house. If you play your cards right, you'll get more fresh eyes on your business on Small Business Saturday than on any other day of the year. (Did you know that independent bookstores typically register their highest sales on that day?)

However, what those eyes see can make the difference between success and failure. If you have stacks of files cluttering your shop floor, they have to go - and a records/information management expert can help. Its team of vetted and screened professionals can help you determine which information you want to move offsite and out of your way, and what information you can securely shred and destroy.

Step #2: Throw a party. No kidding here! After all, what better way to get noticed than to be the host? During the last Small Business Saturday, more than 3,000 local businesses and organizations sponsored themed events and activities, including selfie contests, sleigh rides, dinners and parades.

Step #3: Be seen on the social media scene. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, to name a few, are valuable channels for generating buzz about your brand. Be sure to post and tweet before Saturday - even if you haven't been posting for a while - to let people know your plans for the big day.

Yes, Wilt was right: Everybody pulls for the Davids - in this case, our nation's small businesses. So, David, be sure to take these steps for making your business more organized and efficient - something to pull for 365 days a year.
