Mumbai, March 18, 2009: The Hon'ble President of Chile Her Excellency Dr. Michelle Bachelet will visited JSW Steel corporate office at Peddar Road today to have an overview of the Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) activities of the JSW Steel Ltd.
Dr Bachelet, who is leading a highlevel Chilean delegate, was briefed on the CSR activities of the JSW Group by Mrs. Sangita Jindal who is the chairperson of the JSW Foundation, an independent Trust, which administers the social development initiatives of the JSW Group.
The JSW Foundation, besides highlighting its emphasis on the girl child and women's empowerment in most of the projects it undertakes to the highlevel Chilean delegates, also presented an overview of the Foundations' diverse activities to the Chilean tea m.
The JSW Foundation has collaborated with the UNESCO World Heritage site at Hampi is situated close to JSW Steel's Vijayanagar works. The Hampi Foundation was set up in 2000 to formulate a comprehensive master plan for management of the ruins. The Foundation sponsors the Hampi Utsav Festival, an annual gathering of local and national level artist. A major conference on Hampi was also organised in the month of February 2008.
JSW Steel Ltd recently bagged the prestigious 'Golden Peacock Award for Corporate Social Responsibility for the year 2008' by the Golden Peacock Awards Jury, under the Chairmanship of HE Dr Ola Ullsten, former Prime Minister of Sweden and CoChairmanship of Justice P N Bhagwati, for mer Chief Justice of India. Honorable Deputy Minister of Econo my and Innovation, Government of Portugal Prof. Antonio Castro Guerra presented the Award to JSW Steel on February 26,
2009 at Vila moura, Portugal in the presence of distinguished business and public leaders and CSR experts.
"JSW Steel received 'The Golden Peacock Awards for CSR' in recognition of the work and efforts for CSR initiatives. The CSR initiatives of JSW Group are undertaken through the JSW Foundation. All social initiatives are carried out with a focus on 'Community Development Through People for People,' wherein vocational training, agriculture development, garbage manage ment, health initiatives, women empower ment, educational initiatives and art, culture & heritage preservation activities are undertaken. Annually, JSW allocate 1.5 % of profit after tax for community development works," Said Mrs Sangita Jindal.
"The Foundation lays equal emphasis on programs and systems. While, its all women rural nonvoice BPO, vocational education centres and nutrition projects have led to change in the lives of many young wo men, most of whom have faced difficult domestic situations. The Foundation has also mobilised a suitable allocation for social development work and a platform for its employees to contribute and volunteer for such work," Mrs Sangita Jindal said.
"Some of the prominent activities of the Foundation includes midday to over 1,
50,000 students covering 800 schools in Karnataka. The municipal solid waste management, vocational training together with development of a 'model village' in Karnataka has made considerable impact on the development of Local community, "Mrs. Sangita Jindal added.
The Golden Peacock Award has been instituted to encourage initiatives in CSR by the Centre for Social Responsibility supported by Institute of Directors (IOD) Centre for Corporate Governance (CFCG) and the W orld Council For Corporate Governance (W CFCG), UK.UNSits
