FLORENCE, March 1 (Reuters) - The Italian government signed on Friday a Memorandum Of Understanding (MoU) with Indian steel-to-power conglomerate JSW Group as part of the efforts to relaunch the Piombino steelmaking site in Tuscany, the industry ministry said.

The move follows a similar agreement reached in January with Italian machine-maker Danieli and Ukraine's Metinvest .

Rome is aiming to expand Piombino's steel production, focusing on track manufacturing.

"I am sure that the combination of the two investments will offer great opportunities in terms of production and supply capacity, restoring Piombino's dignity as a major steelmaking site that meets the highest technological and environmental standards.", Industry Minister Adolfo Urso said in a statement.

An agreement with JSW Steel Italy is expected in three months.

Italy is also seeking ways to keep the troubled former Ilva steel company afloat after a clash with its main shareholder ArcelorMittal.

Last month Italian government took charge of Acciaierie d'Italia's plants - as Ilva is now known - under a special administration procedure, a process similar to Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the United States.
