Hospice professional Michelle Crowell named AHPCO president

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - LHC Group's Michelle Crowell, a resident of Florence, Ala., and regional QAPI coordinator for Alabama and Idaho, has been named president of the Alabama Hospice and Palliative Care Organization's 2017 executive board. Crowell previously served as the AHPCO's board secretary.

Crowell has worked in hospice for 15 years. She served patients and families as administrator at Keller Hospice in Tuscumbia, Ala., for over three years. She has written two books on hospice care: 'What Do You See: Painting the Picture in Hospice Documentation for Eligibility' and 'It's Not about Dying, It's About Living: Making Difficult Decisions in the Name of Love.'

Keller Hospice is part of LHC Group, a national provider of post-acute care services with 12,000 employees operating more than 400 locations in 26 states.

In her new role with the AHPCO, Crowell will oversee the responsibilities of the organization such as event planning, financials, and voting opportunities.

'It is an honor and a privilege to be named president of the AHPCO,' Crowell said. 'In this position, I want to focus on taking the organization to new heights.'

According to the AHPCO, the organization consists of hospice and palliative care providers and programs from around the state. It 'provides up-to-date and accurate information regarding end-of-life care… works to improve public policy regarding end-of-life care by providing information to elected officials and decision makers… and to promote a better understanding of hospice and palliative care within our communities.'

Hospice professionals provide the emotional, spiritual and medical support needed when patients are facing the final stages of life. Hospice services help patients live comfortably, with dignity, when a cure is no longer possible. Hospice care programs can be provided in any place a patient calls home, including nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
