  • In 2017, Magyar Telekom continued its intense network development: according to its earlier plans, the company covered 270 additional households with broadband fixed network in one year. In more than 40 percent of the newly covered homes, gigabit capable optical network was implemented.
  • This way, at least 30 Mbit/s fixed service is now available on the Telekom network in more than 3 million households. From which gigabit capable optical network is in place in 800 thousand homes enabling the use of the internet service up to 2000 Mbit/s.
  • The goal in this year is to cover additional 300 thousand homes, one-third of which can already be implemented with the utilization of EU resources.
  • The expansion of the broadband network contribute to the digital development of Hungary and to achieving nation-wide broadband coverage. Telekom trusts that by its broadband developments it helps its customers to upgrade to be part of now and to make use of the digital opportunities.

Relying on its own resources, Magyar Telekom speeded up the process of developing its next generation fixed network in the spring of 2015. As a result, today it is able to provide internet service of at least 30 Mbit/s in more than 3 million homes. In 800 thousand households gigabit capable optical network is available to the customers, who may also choose price plans 1 of the service provider offering 1000 or 2000 Mbit/s speed.

According to the preliminary plans, in 2017 high-speed broadband internet was made available on the Telekom network in nearly 270 thousand additional homes. From these 800 thousand households, 9 thousand were covered with the use of granted EU resources.

Developments were implemented using various technologies (gigabit capable optical network in more than 40 percent of the cases) nationally, in cities and small settlements (the list is not full):

  • Works performed in the capital city continued to play important role in the optical developments implemented with the use of own resources: quality of the service has significantly improved in Districts II, XI, XII and XIV.
  • Developments also reached a number of minor settlements in the suburban and rural areas, for example: Törökbálint, Szentendre,Császártöltés, Újszász, Vác, Kápolnásnyék, Izsák, Jászapáti, Környe, Pápa, Tófalu, Kápolna.
  • As part of the Superfast Internet Program (SZIP) providing EU resources through tendering, Telekom mainly covered minor settlements like Gödre, Noszvaly, Csány, Hajdúbagos, Rózsaszentmárton.

As a result of the developments, the new network offers to the customers super fast internet of at least 30 Mbit/s speed, the opportunity of interactive television, wide selection of TV channels, as well as multi-screen movie rental option. Based on the experience of Telekom, customers living in the newly covered areas responded to the development, as well as to the products and offers available on the new network rather positively, which confirms the importance of the network development.

Nation-wide network development of Telekom is continuing this year: In 2018, the goal is to cover 300 thousand households, most of which (98 percent) is going to be implemented with gigabit capable optical network. Besides the powerful own developments, a new momentum is given by the fact that in the first two rounds of the call for national development of digital networks, EU support equal to 11.5 billion HUF has been awarded to Magyar Telekom for 44 districts. These EU tender projects form already one-third of this year's goal. In the concerned districts, planning and licensing tasks are nearing completion, whereas in a dozen settlements (Erdőkövesd, Homorúd, Ivád, etc.) implementation is currently in progress, and completed networks are expected to be delivered already in Q1. As for powerful own developments, significant coverage is going to be implemented in Districts I, II, VI, IX, XI, XII, XIV and XIX of Budapest, whereas in the rural areas significant developments are expected in minor (Gyöngyössolymos, Balinka, Szárliget, Mosonszolnok etc.) and major (e.g. Keszthely, Székesfehérvár, Szerencs) settlements.

Besides the fixed network development Telekom moved forward in the nationwide rollout of its mobile network and connected already the 2700th small settlement to its superfast 4G network. This way the 4G mobile internet service is available for more than 99% of the population (outside coverage).
