Variable whole life insurance with currency options that provide customers with secure investment results in yen or regular payouts

Today, Manulife Life Insurance Company (President & CEO:Gavin Robinson; Head Office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; referred to as "Manulife Japan" hereinafter) launched a new product, Currency Options Type Variable WL Insurance (Renewable Interest Crediting Rate Type with Fixed Portion) or Wrap Partner. The new product was launched at Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank Co., Ltd (Director & President: Hitoshi Tsunekage; referred to as "Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank" hereinafter).

Wrap Partner is a single premium variable whole life insurance with currency options that aims to grow assets by investing in foreign currency. It provides customers with the option to receive investment earnings in Japanese yen or receive regular payouts from investment earnings. The innovative product is the result of the successful partnership between Manulife Japan's product development capabilities and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank's investment expertise.

Wrap Partner invests the single premium in either US dollars or in Australian dollars. The policy's single premium is split into the "fixed portion" and the "variable portion". The "fixed portion" guarantees asset growth with an interest crediting rate set at the time of policy issue and the "variable portion" aims to deliver attractive returns reflecting changes in the investment environment. In receiving investment earnings, customers are offered two options, the "target type" that secures the investment results in yen, and the "regular payout type" that allows customers to receive benefits regularly in the contract currency, which is a first-in-the industry feature(*1).

Manulife Japan continues to focus on developing innovative products to help each and every customer lead a fulfilling life now and attain an ideal future, upholding its new brand slogan, "Live Today, Pave the Way for Tomorrow."

Features of Wrap Partner:

1. Whole life insurance that allow you to enjoy benefits and leave assets for your family

  • The single premium is divided into the fixed portion and the variable portion (*2), where the former accumulates by an interest crediting rate set at the time of policy issue, and the latter is managed according to the advice of Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank to effectively reflect changes in market conditions.
  • Customers can select either US dollar or Australian dollar as the policy's currency.
  • In the event of death of the insured, the minimum amount guaranteed is equivalent to the basic benefit.
  • The policy does not require self-disclosure.

2. Target type: Grow your assets to reach the target and secure the investment result in yen.

  • A target amount in yen is set for a policy at 110%, 120%, 130%, 140%, 150% or 200% of the yen equivalent value of the single premium (*3).
  • When the policy value reaches the yen target after one year from the policy issue date, the investment result is automatically fixed in yen.
  • Even if the policy misses the target, the fixed portion guarantees 100% or 110% (*4) of the single premium at the end of the first crediting rate application period.

3. Regular payout type: Grow your assets and regularly receive benefits to spend.

  • From the first policy anniversary, annual regular benefits are paid out from the variable portion as long as the insured is alive. The payout amount varies reflecting the investment performance.
  • Regardless of the investment performance of the variable portion, the fixed portion guarantees 105% (*4) of the single premium at the end of the first crediting rate application period.
