"Manulife Waku Waku Room" Opens at National Rehabilitation Center for Children with Disabilities, Tokyo
Tokyo - Manulife Life Insurance Company ("Manulife Japan"), together with the NPO Children's Health Forum and Central Community Chest of Japan, have joined with the National Rehabilitation Center for Children with Disabilities to create a "Manulife Waku Waku Room," a recreational space within the hospital aimed at providing psychological support to children receiving medical care. A ceremony marking the opening of the room was held on October 19, attended by representatives from National Rehabilitation Center for Children with Disabilities.
The "Manulife Waku Waku Room" project, started in 2008, is one of several initiatives conducted by the Children's Health Forum to improve the medical treatment environment for children in Japan. The project aims to raise awareness of the significance of playrooms for the well-being of children undergoing medical treatment and to support the creation of high quality playrooms and services meeting these needs.
It is well documented that providing hospitalized children with a place to play, allowing them to put thoughts of their illness and treatment procedures aside while building social skills through interaction with other children, is an important factor in reducing children's hospitalization stress. However, it is generally acknowledged that the number of hospitals with facilities for this purpose is insufficient to meet current needs.
National Rehabilitation Center for Children with Disabilities is the ninth facility to receive funding as part of the "Manulife Waku Waku Room" project and the first in Tokyo to host a Manulife Waku Waku Room.
