On May 21, 2014, more than 1,700 Marriott International headquarters associates volunteered more than 6,000 hours during the company's worldwide Spirit to Serve Our Communities Day. Volunteers worked throughout the day building, painting, planting, and packaging food that would aid 27 local nonprofit organizations in the D.C. metro area.  [See slideshow below.]

Among the activities Marriott volunteers participated in was the KaBoom! custom playground build in Edgewood Terrace, Northeast Washington, DC. KaBoom! is a national non-profit dedicated to ensuring that children living in poverty gain access to play spaces. "The KaBOOM! playground build at Edgewood Terrace is one of many community efforts that Marriott is participating in today as part of our annual global day of service, where associates are encouraged to volunteer their time and talent to community organizations," said Joanne Thomas, Manager of Social Responsibility and Business Councils.  "For the Edgewood build, we are dedicating more than 100 volunteers to ensure this build is a success."

Marriott associates also rallied to donate diapers to the DC Diaper Bank. A group of 25 volunteers delivered, then bundled a total of 15,000 diapers for the Diaper Bank's numerous family services agencies.  Meantime, at Marriott's headquarters, members of the company's e-Commerce group provided free consulting and the concept for a kick-starter marketing campaign for DC Diaper Bank's digital channels. Additionally, volunteers worked with Outreach International to package 25,000 macaroni and cheese meals for the Capital Area Food Bank.

Spirit to Serve Our Communities Day is an integral part of Associate Appreciation Week where Marriott associates on every continent come together as a team to give back to their local community.
