McDonald's Sauce Poster
Fans of the nihilistic sci-fi show "Rick and Morty" will get their wish Saturday, without having to wait another 97 years for relief.
McDonald's announced it would bring back a 1998 movie tie-in promotional dipping sauce for one day only, complete with a collectible poster, after the airing of the Season 3 finale on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.
"In addition, after nearly 20 years (and perhaps a bit of time travel) we're even doing the impossible..." the company teased online.
did-did you guys want this? Szechuan Sauce
on a poster & maybe your taste buds: only on 10/7. Full deets at https://t.co/7WUSDF1C3v pic.twitter.com/eT4PxW3fEiâ" McDonald's (@McDonalds) October 1, 2017
The Szechuan sauce won't be available in Council Bluffs, but fans may be able to get their hands on it starting at 2 p.m. Saturday at the McDonald's store at 7717 Dodge St. in Omaha - which, for any interwebz meme-loving cybersleuthing conspiracy-theorists out there, was spelled "Doge St." on the fast-food chain's website promoting its newest nugget offering: Buttermilk Crispy Tenders.
The sauce, which was originally a limited release to promote Disney's "Mulan," will be available with a limited edition poster featuring 10 McD's dipping sauces. (Here's the fine print: available first come, first served; must purchase a four-, six- or 10-piece Buttermilk Crispy Tenders; dine-in only; no mobile order pay or other fancy ordering allowed; one collectible giveaway per customer; quantities are limited and may vary.)
After weaving an elaborate ruse to break out of an intergalactic prison, Rick, the mad scientist/wizard/god, berates his grandson/sidekick/human shield Morty at the end of the third season's first episode about how important the Szechuan sauce is for his character's motivation.
In typical "Rick and Morty" fashion, albeit with a surprising lack of vulgarity and crudeness, the show's metacommentary is on full display.
"I'll go out and find some more of that Mulan Szechuan Teriyaki dipping sauce, Morty, because that's what this is all about," he says. "I'm driven by finding that McNugget sauce. I want that 'Mulan' McNugget sauce, Morty, that's my series arc, Morty, if it takes nine seasons, I want my McNugget dipping sauce, Szechuan sauce, Morty, that's what's going to take us all the way to the end, Morty, nine more seasons, Morty, nine more seasons until I get that dipping Szechuan sauce, for 97 more years, I want that McNugget sauce, Morty."
For fans looking for a more Iowan "Rick and Morty" adventure Saturday, restaurants in Ames, Cedar Falls, Des Moines, Indianola, Iowa City, Johnson, Ottumwa and Sioux Center are advertising the special promotion.
Some residents of southwest Iowa may also find it easier to navigate themselves to Lincoln, Nebraska, where the store at 2140 K St. is suppose to have the Szechuan sauce, too.
