Mitsui : to Participate in Genetic Analysis Service for General Consumers

Mitsui & Co., Ltd. ("Mitsui", Head Office: Tokyo, President and CEO: Tatsuo Yasunaga) has entered into a share subscription agreement with Genesis Healthcare Co. ("Genesis Healthcare") with the aim of achieving capital participation in Genesis Healthcare through a third-party allocation of shares. Genesis Healthcare provides genetic analysis services for general consumers.

Along with the rapid advance of an aging society, governments and municipal authorities are promoting a variety of measures to control social insurance premiums and to achieve a rich quality of life for people. Under these circumstances, there are strong expectations that genetic analysis services will contribute to health promotion because of their potential to encourage behavior modification to prevent lifestyle-related diseases.

Genesis Healthcare has a track record of more than a decade of business in the field of genetic analysis services and has gained attention as a pioneering company with the largest private sector genetic database in Japan, which contains data for approximately 400,000 people. A large number of the company's genetic testing kits have already been sold on the general consumer market by leading Japanese partners and other companies.

Mitsui decided to participate in Genesis Healthcare with the aim of utilizing Genesis Healthcare's knowledge in the field of genetic analysis. Specifically, Mitsui intends to differentiate and increase the value of business carried out at its affiliated companies in the fields of meals and food products by using Genesis Healthcare's knowledge to provide optimized healthcare services for the individual consumer. Mitsui will also pursue opportunities to create new business in those fields.

1. Genetic Kit specializing in Japanese Obesity Genes

By means of a saliva test, obesity genes are categorized into four types (apple type, pear type, banana type, Adam & Eve type). Advice on diet and a recipe book will be sent according to the category type.

2. Genetic Screening for 360 disease for preventive purposes.

3. Genetic Kit specializaing in skin aging genes

4. Genetic Kit specializing in self-examination of personality /traits
