MTR Awards Contractors for Excellence in Quality, Safety, Environmental Management & Stakeholder Engagement in New Railway Projects

The MTR Corporation has recognised the outstanding performance of contractors working on the five new railway projects in the areas of quality, safety, environmental management, and stakeholder engagement.
At the 2014 MTR Projects Division Quality, Safety, Environmental and Stakeholder Engagement Awards Ceremony, Acting Chief Executive Officer of MTR Corporation Mr Lincoln Leong said safety is of paramount importance in the construction of the new rail lines. "With the expansion of the workforce in railway construction, it is important for us to work even more closely with our contractors to achieve the highest standards of safety. I am pleased to see the dedicated efforts by contractors in partnering with us as a team to promote quality and enhanced environmental standards while maintaining close communication with community stakeholders."
Under Secretary for Development Mr Eric Ma expressed appreciation for the many initiatives implemented by the Corporation to promote workers' health at work sites and to having contractors participate in the Contractor Co-operative Training Scheme to contribute their knowledge, experience and time to encourage and nurture new joiners to the construction industry.
At the ceremony, the Grand Safety Award was presented to Samsung - Hsin Chong Joint Venture (Shatin to Central Link) for implementing a series of safety measures such as tidy site management, adequate safety training and provision of safety facilities to effectively foster a strong safety culture among frontline workers. To ensure public safety, Samsung - Hsin Chong Joint Venture also introduced concrete hoardings along footpaths in the To Kwa Wan area where large-scale temporary traffic management schemes are in place.
Other award winners include:

Gold Environmental Award - Nishimatsu Construction Company Ltd (South Island Line(East)) and Leighton Contractors (Asia) Ltd (Shatin to Central Link) for successfully reducing construction noise to nearby communities with the use of effective measures

such as insulating fabric to fully enclose works plants.

Gold Stakeholder Engagement Award - Chun Wo - Hip Hing Joint Venture (Kwun Tong

Line Extension) for their proactive and established efforts to gain the trust of stakeholders in the Whampoa area where more than 100 traffic diversions had to be implemented to
facilitate construction work in the congested neighbourhood.

Gold Quality Award - Kier - Laing O'Rourke - Kaden Joint Venture (South Island Line (East))


for their outstanding quality and control measures in project management.

Launched in 2010, the annual MTR Pro jects Division Quality, Safety, Environmental and Stakeholder Engagement Awards aim to promote continuous improvement in the specified areas during delivery of new railway pro jects for Hong Kong.
