London, June 26, 2017 - NEC Europe Ltd. today announced that the University of Huddersfield adopted the NEC VC-971 encoder to assist with experimental Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV Broadcasting transmissions that took place in May 2017. This testing of video and audio quality for a variety of code settings is expected to help define the future of UHD TV broadcasting.

Experiments took place on-campus through a broadcasting test bed that included a 10W DVB-T2 transmitter and an antenna system on the 15th floor of the main university building. Transmissions were licensed by Ofcom, the United Kingdom's communications regulator, and covered the larger area of Huddersfield town on UHF Ch 24. The experiments were supported further by the newly developed HEVC (H.265) coding standard and a new generation NEC VC-971 encoder, featuring a conveniently compact size, real-time performance and support for features such as High Dynamic Range (HDR).

'This is an important piece of testing which will contribute towards the future of UHD TV broadcasting,' said Dr. Pavlos Lazaridis with the Faculty of Computing & Engineering at the University of Huddersfield.

'We are delighted to have contributed to the University of Huddersfield tests by providing our latest generation VC-971,' said Gary Collins, Regional Sales Director, NEC Europe. 'Consumer demand for rich media and high-quality video and audio content consumed across multiple devices shows no signs of abating. Solutions such as NEC's VC-971 allow broadcasters the ability to deliver rich content services in an efficient way, saving bandwidth and valuable resources. We look forward to continued collaboration with the University of Huddersfield.'

NEC has vast experience in CODEC development over the last 20 years, including the supply of their latest generation HEVC encoder and decoder, the VC-971/VD-971, based on the H.265 coding standard. This equipment offers a solution for real-time, ultra-low delay and high video quality powered by an in-house unique encoding algorithm. The compact, LSI based-design, is a commercial broadcast-grade product offering high reliability and availability.
